NorDig Unified Specification 3.0
NorDig release: NorDig Unified IRD Specification v3.0 (Dec. 2017)
NorDig releases a new major update of the NorDig Unified IRD specification, which among things adds new technical IRD requirements for reception of UHD and HEVC services according with DVB specifications in addition to previous requirements.
Main updates in NorDig Unified Specification version 3.0 compared to previous version 2.6 are:
- HEVC IRD “profile” (video, audio, subtitling, I/O, SI, HbbTV etc.)
- Video HEVC decoding, up to UHD with HDR & WCG up to 50fps (SFR)
- HbbTV becomes mandatory for NorDig HEVC iDTVs
- DVB-S2X technical requirements (as optional) for NorDig HEVC IRDs
- TTML Subtitling for HEVC IRDs
- SSU (sw update), allow Over-The-Network (Internet distributed) SSU as an alternative
New definitions for NorDig IRD, basic IRD, HEVC IRD, STB and iDTV etc.:
NorDig specifications cover all kinds of IRD types, like as separate units (set-top-boxes) and as relevant parts of integrated digital TV-sets (iDTVs). A NorDig IRD may as earlier be implemented in different IRD variants:
– FrontEnd variants: satellite, cable, terrestrial or IPTV IRD
– Implementation type variants: STB or iDTV (IRD refers both STB and iDTV).
The NorDig specification also includes different IRD “profiles”, depending on the IRD’s capability (basic, PVR, HbbTV, HEVC). The NorDig IRD may be implemented with minimum of capability, NorDig Basic IRD, or implemented with one or several optional capacities in addition to the minimum.
NorDig has following optional additional IRD capabilities:
HEVC a NorDig IRD with UHDTV HEVC HDR&WCG SFR capability
HEVC HFR a NorDig IRD with UHDTV HEVC HDR&WCG HFR capability (planned for the future)
HbbTV a NorDig IRD with HbbTV capability
PVR a NorDig IRD with capability for recording services and later playback

The NorDig specifications cover three areas:
- NorDig specifications for Integrated Receiver Decoders (which includes for example STBs, PVRs and relevant parts of integrated digital TV-sets), version 3.0 (December 2017).
- NorDig Rules of Operation, specifications for the use of transmit parameters in NorDig compliant networks, version 2.5.0 (October 2016). The Rules of Operation specification is planned to be updated in near future.
- NorDig Test Plan, specification for how to verify implementation in NorDig Integrated Receiver Decoders, version 2.5.0 (January 2016) and together now with NorDig Unified Test Plan addendum for HbbTV 1.0 (December 2016). The NorDig Test Plan addendum for HbbTV specify the minimum test cases to be fulfilled in HbbTV organisation’s test suit for NorDig Hybrid IRDs plus a number of NorDig specific test cases for HbbTV.
The Test Plan specification is planned to be updated shortly to meet the changes in NorDig Unified Specification.
All specifications are based on DVB and the minimum performance sets that are specified for NorDig compliant networks. The use of the NorDig specifications is described in “About NorDig” at www.nordig.org.
