Press release – NorDig Rules of Operation specification ver. 3.1.1

NorDig releases NorDig Rules of Operation specification ver. 3.1.1 (November 2020)

This new updated NorDig RoO (Rules of Operation) specifications ver.3.1.1 is a major update to be in line with NorDig Unified IRD specification ver. 3.1.1, NorDig Unified Test plan ver. 3.1.1 and NorDig Metadata Exchange format specification ver. 1.3.

The NorDig RoO specifies basic guidelines and rules for digital TV transmission for the broadcasters and operators, while NorDig IRD and Test Plan specification specifies basic implementation requirements for consumer digital TV receivers for the IRD (TV set and STB) manufactures. All NorDig specifications are based upon DVB and HbbTV specifications.

NorDig has put an extra effort to redesigned the new NorDig RoO specification to be in line with the NorDig Unified IRD specification in layout and structure, among things to make it easier to use together with NorDig’s other specifications and to ensure that the industry better understands how to meet the updated requirements.

The work with updating the current RoO specification has been underway in NorDig over a long period,  the former NorDig RoO specification v. 2.5 is from 2016, has been missing a number of new main features from the current NorDig Unified IRD specification v. 3.1.1 (2019) and NorDig Test plan v. 3.1.1 (2019) like (NGA) Audio and HEVC video, which this major update of the NorDig RoO to v. 3.1.1 solves.

NorDig’s intension is to keep the three main specifications (IRD, Test and RoO) in line with each other and to be updated simultaneous.

The NorDig specifications cover four areas:

  1. NorDig specifications for Integrated Receiver Decoders (which includes for example STBs, PVRs and relevant parts of integrated digital TV-sets), version 3.1.1 (September 2019).
  2. NorDig Test Plan, specification for how to verify implementation in NorDig Integrated Receiver Decoders, version 3.1.1 (September 2019). The Test Plan specification is planned to be updated shortly to meet the changes in NorDig Unified Specification.
  3. NorDig Rules of Operation, specifications for the use of transmit parameters in NorDig compliant networks, version 3.1.1 (November 2020).
  4. NorDig Metadata Exchange format specification version 1.3 (October 2019) for Live and On demand services in cable, satellite, terrestrial, IP-based networks and internet.

All specifications are based on DVB and the minimum performance sets that are specified for NorDig compliant networks. The use of the NorDig specifications is described in “About NorDig” at www.nordig.org.

NorDig is specifying a common platform for Digital Television to be used within the Nordic region (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) and Éire.
